Postcards from Esperance

endless amount of beauty and being barefoot in the snow white sand

Western Australia's (not so) hidden gem?

Alex and I booked our flights Brisbane > Perth off Skyscanner (roughly $500/each). Before we headed off to Esperance, I was telling my mates about our trip and no-one had any idea where it was. If you’re in the same boat and have never heard of Esperance, I hope this blog inspires you to visit this magical place.

Pristine turquoise waters, white squeaky sand, kangaroos on the beach and a destination away from the city. What else can you ask for? You can visit Esperance anytime of the year and you’ll be glad you came. Catch those rays in the summer or go whale watching in the winter. There’s a few options on how to get there. You can fly, catch a coach bus or do a road trip, whichever you prefer. You’re looking at a 7-8 hour drive or a 90 minute flight from Perth. I do recommend hiring a car or camper-van because you’ll have more freedom to do what you want (more details below).

Albany ~ Two Peoples Bay

This first location isn’t in Esperance, but I wanted to add it because it was our first stop! Albany is a 4h 40m drive from Perth and a 5h drive from Esperance. If you’re doing a road trip, I highly recommend you stop here because Albany is beautiful.

We landed in Perth at 12:20pm and we had a few errands that we had to do before we started driving down south. We wouldn’t make it to Esperance before sundown so we decided to take advantage of the light we had and stopped in Albany for the night. We found this beautiful Bay to watch the sunset, thankfully we made it just in time. The sky was a little overcast but it lit up for us just enough to capture the beauty! I quickly put the drone up and there were two sharks swimming near the shore to welcome us, score!

Lucky Bay

First stop in Esperance! I was so excited to finally meet these iconic Kangaroos so I made it our first priority. There is no need to worry that you won’t see these guys. It’s pretty rare not too! Their super friendly and they will come straight up to you for a pat.. or maybe even try and bomb your photo? 😉 This beach isn’t only good for the Kangaroos but it’s perfect if you want to go for a swim.

some people say this beach has the whitest beach in Australia. Some people (ahem, Alex) say Hyams Beach in NSW has the whitest sand. Who bloody knows hey. I’ll Leave that for the professionals. Surely we can say this is still an amazing Aussie beach?

Blue Haven

Hands down, my favourite beach ever. I still can’t believe how blue the water was! Once you’re done viewing the turquoise waters from a far, head down the wooden stairs and jump in for a swim. Australia has the best beaches ever! (comment below if you disagree with me because i’d love to see something more beautiful than this) The Sand is soft, the beach is sheltered and it has the perfect conditions for swimming or anything water related. You must see this place for yourself.

Also – DOG friendly beach! 5 stars from me!

Salmon Beach

This beach is right before you turn to Blue Haven Beach. We parked the Van right up on the edge and took a nap looking out to the ocean. It’s actually kind of funny, we almost didn’t see Blue Haven because we thought this beach was it. Don’t make the same mistake we did and read the signs haha.

Twilight Beach

Once again, pristine waters and the finest white sand. Did you notice that there’s a trend in Esperance? We rocked up and it was like looking at a postcard. The best part about this beach is it’s only a short drive from town! It has a good size parking lot with bathrooms and outdoor showers.

Duke of Orleans

Wharton Beach

The Duke is about an hour east of Esperance. It’s worth the trip and I recommend you spend as much time as you can here. They have an awesome caravan park close by where you can spend the night with all the amenities you need.

There is 4WD access down to the beach, I mean how good is it to park up on a beach, cook up a dinner and just watch the waves go by. The sunset here was amazing! The sky was lit up and the reflection on the water was magical. We were really lucky, everyone on the beach ended up leaving right before sunset so we had the entire beach to ourselves!

I might just leave it at that and let the photos speak for themselves.

ON THE ROAD BACK TO PERTH

random find!

We were driving on the way to Wave Rock and and we saw this truck on a hill on the side of the road. Probably the most random thing i’ve ever seen. Anyone know how this happened?

I can’t remember how long we were driving for but i’m sure you won’t miss it! It’s worth pulling over to have a look.

Hyden, Western Australia

Roughly a 4h drive from Esperance. We took a different route back to Perth so we could see Wave Rock. It actually works out perfectly, you don’t have to go out of your way to see this spot. So, why not go!

Wave Rock is a 2700 million year old granite cliff located only 4km east of Hyden. It’s 15 meters high and 110 meters long and it looks like a big wave, hence the name. We assumed it was caused by wind but it was actually caused by water erosion and weathering. Super neat!

If you have time to explore, there are so many other things you can see in Hyden. The information centre can give you more details or just google it 🙂

How did we get around?

Travellers Auto Barn!

Click HERE to book your van now!

Our home on wheels! I could not recommend Travellers Autobarn enough. We drove around in their Kuga campervan and it made the trip so easy. It has a built in kitchenette with a gas cooker, fridge, sink and microwave. We saved so much money cooking ourselves vs eating out 3 x a day. That’s not even the best part! They don’t charge you for extra kilometres! You don’t need to stress about going over, you can just focus on enjoying your trip.

✧ Want to see the famous Pink Lake aka Lake Hillier? Don’t get confused by the Pink Lake on the main land in Esperance. To see Lake Hillier, you’ll need to book a flight or cruise to an island to see it. Yes. We made this mistake. The Pink Lake in Esperance used to be pink but it’s not anymore.

MUST GO:

It was unfortunately rainy when we went but it was still beautiful. I could imagine what these places would look like on a sunny day!

SOME EXTRA INFO

✧ You don’t actually need that much time here. We were only in Western Australia for 5 days total. Once you’re in Esperance, everything is fairly close to each other.

✧ I don’t recommend driving at night due to a lot of Kangaroos.

✧ If you plan to stay at the caravan parks, make sure you book in advance. Most of them are fully booked depending on the time of the year.
