Maryborough
Visit Fraser Coast
Maryborough is a historic city located along the Mary River in the Fraser Coast Region. It is roughly a 30 minute drive from Hervey Bay and a 2-3 hour drive from Brisbane. You will find that this town is full of the friendliest locals around, who take pride in where they live. It has so much history and I promise, you won’t get bored. If you get a chance to stop into Maryborough, I highly recommend it!
Below I have put together a list of a few things that you can do whilst you are visiting.
Maryborough Mural Trail
Along the streets of Maryborough you will find 37 different murals hidden away for you to find. Each mural has its own placard with a story to tell about the cities past. Alex and I learnt so much about Maryborough whilst we were walking around. I love it when there are murals scattered around towns like this, it’s like one big scavenger hunt. My personal favourite is the ‘Under the Sea’ mural which showcases the regions underwater ecology.
Click HERE for the map of the Mural Trail or you can stop into the visitor centre and they’ll be happy to give you a hard copy 🙂
Mary Poppins House
✧ Discover the magic of Mary Poppins ✧
Did you know that Maryborough is the birthplace of the author who created Mary Poppins?
Pamela Lyndon Travers, the Author of Mary Poppins, was born in what is now known as The Story Bank. It is a heritage-listed building that was built in 1881. The community recently restored it and turned it into the perfect place to showcase her upbringing and to tell her tales. The art here is magical and it feels like you are in a fantasy land. This interactive experience is delightful for all ages. It’s great for kids and fun for adults. The staff are super friendly and are there to answer any questions you may have.
Before you leave, don’t forget to get a photo with the life sized Mary Poppins statue. It is located on the corner of Kent and Richmond Streets right outside The Story Bank.
ps. keep a lookout for the mice drawings on the walls.
Gallipoli to Armistice War Memorial
WALK WITH THE ANZACS
Location
Queens Park, Sussex Street
Alex and I always make sure to stop at war memorials whilst exploring new places and this one is truly something special. I left this memorial with goosebumps and full of pride of the Australians that fought for our country and sacrificed their lives. This is a virtual war memorial that walks us through the Australian stories featuring one officer in particular, Lieutenant Chapman. He was born and raised in Maryborough and was the first allied soldier to step ashore at Gallipoli. His story will forever be remembered and never forgotten. I would love to return here for an ANZAC day dawn service.
Make sure to bring your phone because they have QR codes where you can scan and learn more about each story.
Military & Colonial Museum
They say expect the unexpected and they are not wrong! When you think of military museums you might think it would only appeal to soldiers and history buffs but this museum captures the interest of all kinds of visitors including young ones. This place is insane not only because it has the second most value of memorabilia in Australia (behind the Australian War Memorial in Canberra) but because is has the biggest collection of personal medals in the country. You could spend hours, even days here! Get ready to immerse yourself into exciting history and jaw dropping items. There are very enthusiastic ex-serving volunteers that will help you with any questions or queries you have. Well worth the visit!
